Production description

The process begins with electric arc or basic oxygen furnace melting, where alloying elements (copper, chromium, nickel, phosphorus) are added to achieve the specific chemical composition for atmospheric corrosion resistance. The molten steel is continuously cast into slabs. Slabs are reheated to 1150–1250°C and hot rolled on a reversing or tandem mill to the target thickness. Controlled rolling and cooling rates are applied to refine grain structure and optimize mechanical properties. After rolling, the steel is leveled, inspected, and optionally pickled to remove mill scale. Some grades are cold rolled and annealed for thinner gauges. The finished steel is then cut to length or coiled. The unique patina develops naturally over time when exposed to outdoor weather, eliminating the need for protective coatings.

Under normal outdoor conditions, a stable patina begins to form within 6 months to 2 years, depending on humidity, rainfall, and exposure to pollutants. The rust layer gradually darkens and becomes more adherent over time.

2. Can weathering steel be welded without losing corrosion resistance?
Yes, but we recommend using matching weathering steel electrodes (e.g., AWS E7018-W) to maintain similar corrosion resistance. After welding, the heat-affected zone will naturally develop a patina like the base metal, though initial rusting may appear slightly different.

3. Is it necessary to apply any protective coating?
No, in most atmospheric environments, weathering steel is designed to be used bare. However, in highly aggressive environments (coastal areas with high chloride, or prolonged humidity), a clear or low-VOC coating may be applied for additional protection.
